Winter in Cape Town isn’t all doom and gloom and although its our rainy season ( and we really need the rain ) you also get some extremely pleasant days in between. When the dark dreary weather does strike, don’t start crying and get back into bed. There are plenty of fun cold weather activities that will take your mind off the lack of sunshine you might be experiencing.
Enjoy the Winter Specials
There is nothing I love more than seeing the buy one get one free specials pop up all over the place in Winter. Before the tourist season starts in full force try out all the restaurants you can that have specials on. Our favorites at the moment are Col’cacchio Tuesday buy one get one free pizza special and Tigers Milk buy one get one free burger night. Its mostly these two because they are like a two minute drive from our place and who wants to drive far when its cold. I miss Netflix, my cats and my new fireplace way too much. If you don’t feel like those two, don’t fret, there are PLENTY of other places.
Visit an indoor market
There are plenty of gorgeous and lets face it, delicious markets to make your way to in Winter time. Enjoy a live band and some great food at the Mojo Market in Sea point or the lovely Watershed Market in the V&A Waterfront. Markets are where Cape Town people love to hang out Summer or Winter! Fresh produce, warm food and a live band always helps to keep the winter blues at bay!

I am not going to get specific with this because there are so many choices. Wine tasting or wine pairings in Winter is a thing, a glorious thing. Wine farms are known to be gorgeous and they usually have fireplaces, and lots of wine, also food. There isn’t a thing not to like. Unless you don’t like wine, in which case you should probably not be in Cape Town. In all seriousness, its the best.
Nothing relaxes the body and mind like torrential rain, howling wind and a lovely massage. Book yourself in for a day at the spa and you wont even know what the weather is doing outside. The 12 Apostles has a great one with plunge pools, a rasul chamber and loads of treatments.
Go on a hike
Some hikes are obviously not made for wet weather but Cape Town boasts plenty of places to go for a walk so there is always somewhere to go get fit. One of my favorite rainy day paths is the pipe track as it makes for a relatively easy but super enchanting walk in Winter time.

Go see a show
The Artscape, The Theatre on the Bay and The Fugard always have good shows running and its a great way to spend a day or evening in Winter.
Go Up Table Mountain
Table Mountain is sometimes the best in Winter. The crowds are gone, as is the wind ( mostly ) and you might even get to see snow but you probably won’t. It’s still a lovely time to see the views, especially on a crisp clear morning.
Drink all the coffee
There are plenty of great coffee places in Cape Town. Release your inner hipster and visit a new one every time. My favorite are Bootleggers and Maison J in Camps bay, Haas in Town as well as Truth with their epic steampunk look.
Visit the Planetarium
The brand new digital dome just opened at the Planetarium and it sounds pretty epic. Why not grab a few friends and get lost in space and science for the day.
Watch the Cape Of Storms in action
If it’s a stormy day the waves our bound to be huge. Grab your rain poncho and some waterproof shoes and take a drive along the coast looking for the biggest waves. Watching them from further away is definitely better, especially if you have a flask of hot chocolate by your side.
