10 Ways to up your Travel Instagram Game

Travel instagram tips and tricks!

So let me start off by saying that instagram is not the end all, be all of all social media. Its a really popular app at the moment but don’t shun your other social networks and only focus on instagram ( having all your eggs in one basket never works out well.)

That being said though, I love love love instagram as a platform. Anything that is visually appealing and easy to use gets an A+ in my book and instagram definitely has a special place in my heart.

At the moment it’s very trendy so everyone wants their account to be the best it can possibly be. Through loads of trial and error I am going to let you guys in on a few ( not so secret ) secrets on how to improve your instagram account.

Take good quality photos

Ok so this is a bit of a obvious one yet i see so many people complaining about not getting engagement that have awful photos. You might be standing on a mountain top with an epic view but if your photo isn’t good no one will care. You might know how beautiful a place is but you need to translate that into a photo as well.

Not everyone has fancy cameras but almost everyone has phone cameras these and I am here to tell you thats fine as well! As long as your composition is good, the lighting is great and you know how to edit you can create something epic!

Look for inspiration but never copy

You can find inspiration for photos everywhere but always make it your own and evolve your style. Directly copying other people photos is obviously a big no-no and even though plenty of people do it, its always better to put your own spin on things. This is especially true with really popular tourist areas. Why not see how you can showcase something in a different light?

Use hashtags

Hashtags are there or a reason and if you don’t use them you are missing out. Its not selling out if you were thinking that. Hashtags help people find your awesome photos and I use hashtags all the time to find things on instagram. Its also good using feature account hashtags because if you do get featured, so many more people will find your account and might want to follow. Just remember to only use hashtags that fit the photo you are posting!

Know which photos do well

With the new functions on instagram its easier than ever to see how your photos are performing. It lets you know which times are best to post and where you traffic is coming from. I have found this information so valuable and its really helped grow my account.

Ask a question

Engagement is something everyone is after and its actually easier than you think. When I scroll through instagram and I see a photo with a question that interests me I always want to answer. Something like who has been to Namibia when you have a photo from there or have you ever been in a helicopter when you have a shot of you flying in one etc. You catch my drift right? I am always amped to say yes and share a story or maybe say no but its on my list!

Questions build a community and I love reading and replying to answers as well. I find it way more interesting than just captioning a photo with a random quote.

Comment on other photos

If you leave valuable, interesting comments on posts you truly enjoy then people will start noticing and go check out your account. This is how communities are formed and loyal followers ( and even sometimes friendships ) are made. Take time out whenever you can to go comment on some of your favorite accounts not just with emoji’s or saying nice but with relevant comments.

Plan your feed

Whenever you can plan your feed ahead. This isn’t always easy, especially if you are travelling to different places a lot but its so worth it even if you just do it for two or three days. It makes it easier to have a fluid theme on your account as well. Mostly Iย plan mine by adding the photos onto my vsco in order and keeping them like that. I can see what new photos will look like and that saves me deleting something after posting because it doesn’t fit in. I have gotten so good at it that I take at least one photo per place that I know will fit.

Use drafts

I love the drafts function on instagram and I think everyone should be using it. After I plan my photos its so easy to just go save a draft with all my text and hashtags to post when its the best time. My best time falls over dinner a lot so then I don’t have to sit for ages putting up my photo.

Play around with stories

Instagram stories can be a really valuable tool to make people want to follow your account. Having an interesting story feed is just as important as having good photos. People love getting a behind the scenes glimpse of what your life is like or even things like tips and tricks and sharing of your favorite accounts. Make it fun and interesting to watch and let your personality shine through!

Don’t take it too seriously

So this almost goes against everything I have been saying but also not really. Work hard and do things the best to your ability but don’t sweat the small stuff. If your photo ( that you love! ) doesn’t perform as well as you though, who cares! You forget to post for two days because you are busy enjoying life, its ok to take a break. You don’t post an instagram story for a week even though you were in the most epic location, life goes on ( just don’t do it again ๐Ÿ˜› ๐Ÿ˜› )

I hope you guys find these tips useful, they really helped me!

Instagram is SO much work. It’s pretty much a job in itself but I love how powerful the tool is. Great tips, especially the last one- don’t take it too seriously! It’ll take the fun out ๐Ÿ™‚

Great advice, girl!! I agree with “Look for inspiration but never copy” – sometimes we run out of ideas how to style or what to post. A little inspiration with our own creativity is a great way to start!

These are very good tips. I always put a lot of hashtags on my post. I need to learn more about taking photos with good quality. I take a lot of photos but then I only use 1 or 2. It is kinda a waste of time so I have to improve my photography skills.

Great tips! I totally agree with taking great photos – some of the photos I see are just not good, and then their caption isn’t relatable (or sometimes even relevant!) which really doesn’t help. Good photographs are a key component of Insta and an area where people really should put more effort in!

Some really great tips! Especially not taking it too seriously. It seems like there is such a huge emphasis right now on exploding your instagram account when really, it might not be as necessary as people think! Quality over quantity always wins.
