5 Unique Safari Lodges To Check Out In South Africa

Safari lodges in South Africa are plentiful and for most part pretty amazing. If you are planning on visiting one it can be a daunting task to decide which is best for you. I have put together a list of my favorite lodges in different catogories to make it a bit easier for you to decide!

Here are my 5 unique safari lodges in South Africa to check out.

Romance – Tinyeleti Treehouse Lion Sands Game Reserve

Staying over at Tinyeleti Treehouse at Lion Sands Game Reserve is definitely a very romantic experience. Star gazing under the African sky from a huge canopy bed in the wild is truly magical.

Have a gin and tonic on your deck overlooking the Sabi river while the sun sets and then enjoy a delicious packed picnic for dinner. All while being completly surrounded by nature. If you are lucky you will hear the distant, or not so distant, call from a passing hyena to send you off to dreamland.

Luxury – Cheetah Plains Sabi Sands Game Reserve

If you are looking for luxury, privacy and some epic experiences then Cheetah Plains is where you need to go. Get your own house with a butler, a private game vehicle and your own chef and you will feel like a celebrity in no time.

It also helps that the lodge houses are full of unique art pieces, there are spa therapists on hand and your next level game vehicle has everyone else green with envy.

Outdoors – Marataba Trails Lodge Marakele National Park

Marataba trails lodge is like the name suggests a safari lodge where you hike rather than go on game drives. The lodge itself has an open African/Scandi feel and is perched on the side of a mountain with views of the Waterberg.

It is a great lodge for honeymooners. Relatively small with only 8 suites, and only over 16 are allowed. The food is delicious and healthy. Shared around a communal table where you will have lots of laughs and wine with your fellow safari goers.

The walks are not intense but they are beautiful and interesting and you are bound to see some game along the way.

Family – Jaci’s Safari Lodge Madikwe

Jaci’s lodges is set in one of the lesser known extremely beautiful game reserves, Madikwe. The sightings there are amazing and the landscape is beautiful. Jaci’s has two lodges there, the treehouse lodge and the safari lodge. To me the safari lodge is great for families. The friendly bright space is inviting and luxurious. A pool, big outside decks ands large suites and all the creature comforts you might need.

A quintessential African safari experience, with fire cooked meals to enjoy under the stars, delicious high teas and adrenaline filled game drives.

Close To Cape Town – Gondwana Game Reserve

If you are visiting, or living in Cape Town and looking for a safari experience closer to home. Luckily there are actually really good options. One of my favorites is Gondwana game reserve that is about a 4 hour drive from Cape Town. They have a lodge as well as villa options on the reserve set in the beautiful rolling landscape.

It is also a big five park where you can see a multitude of animals. You can even relax at your room and have them come to you. There is an elephant watering hole right in front of the main lodge. It definitely makes for some epic sunset game watching!
