7 Deadly Instagram Sins

Excuse the overly dramatic title but lets face it, instagram is something to make a drama over right? Its one of my favorite social platforms, not only to post on, but also for  inspiration, wanderlust and all things beautiful. I can see how so many other people also love it just as much as I do. Lately though with the algorithm changing, instagram heartache has become a real thing. Don’t jump ship just yet though ( rather wait until the next big thing comes along 😛 ) There are plenty of ways to improve your account and make instagram a prettier and happier place!

If you are wondering who am I to tell you how to “insta” then hear me out. I hopped on the bandwagon back in the day when it first started and you could only post photos you took with the app and use only their filters. Through trail and error I found my groove ( still improving every day I hope! ) and was lucky ( unlucky ) enough to be on the suggested users list twice. I went to my fair share of insta walks and paid my dues. Although I don’t know everything I am really trying my best to create unique content that at the very least will make people smile. Also take everything I say with a pinch ( or a handful ) of salt 😛

Here are my 7 deadly instagram sins:

Stealing Content

This seems so obvious yet most people are oblivious to the fact that its not cool to steal photos. Maybe they dont realize it but we work hard to create images, they don’t just appear on our phones. If you hashtag a specific account and they feature you ( full credit of course ) then its fine. If a brand uses your photo to promote their own stuff, not so much even if they tag you. A simple DM asking permission can go far. What happened to manners? If you want to stay ahead of the game post original content or create an epic feature account that is in it for the community not the fame.

Posting too much

Ok so some people post more than once a day and sometimes it is a vibe. Posting five photos in the space of 30min, not so much… If you want to get good engagement and loyal followers then you might want to rethink your overload strategy. Also if you are able to post consistently good content 5 times a day, everyday then shoot me a mail. I would love to know how you do it 😛

Misusing hashtags

#Blessed might be an annoying hashtag but there are plenty that are much worse. Lets say you are searching the #capetown hashtag and 40% of the photos that come up are not of or even taken in Cape Town. Frustrating right? Just because a hashtag is popular doesn’t mean you should use it. Use relevant hashtags and you will get followers that are interested in your content. Easy enough right?

Sharing to every other platform

Once again not all of you will agree with me on this one but sharing your instagram photos via the app on every single platform seems a bit lazy. First off it cuts off some of your caption, it usually doesn’t look that great, and every platform has a different type of user meaning different content. Why not post the full version or a different edit on facebook or twitter?

Ignoring comments

I get a lot of comments but I do try my best to mostly reply to all of them. If I had to reply to every single one I might have to stop working and eating and maybe even sleeping ( jokes ) but seriously, if someone asks you something its only polite to reply. It means you actually care about the people that take the time to interact on your photos.

Posting bad quality photos

I cant even with this, it makes me want to cry, seriously. Not everyone can afford expensive equipment, fair enough. If you have instagram though I am pretty sure you have a half decent phone with a half decent camera. Put a little bit of effort ( I promise you its so easy ) into getting a shot and things will start looking up for you. Things to avoid though are dark photos, unintentional grain and hdr for days. If you can rock any of those also email me.

Being mean

The deadliest sin of all is being a mean, know-it-all troll type person. Why be negative when you can be positive, like really, WHY? Taking the time and effort to make a nasty comment on someones photo is beyond me. If you don’t like someone, or something, or life, then rather just click unfollow and get on with it. Think about how getting an awful comment would make you feel and then rethink leaving one. I am the first person to say “Harden the f%^& up” but if you aren’t spreading hate then you don’t deserve any either.

Agree x a million! I’ve seen a lot of accounts with beautiful pictures but horrible engagement and follower count because they NEVER reply to comments. Kind of a shame! You can’t just drop a photo and dip out anymore.

Thanks for sharing these! I thought I was the only one being annoyed by this! You can avoid these mistakes using common sense, right? Ha! Now I’m just whining in your comment section! In short: I totally agree with you 🙂 Great post!

I try my best to keep up with comments, although I can be a bit poor at times. Definitely, need to pick up my game. I think it’s especially bad to steal peoples content!

This is a great list! I can’t believe people steal content. Like at least photo credit would be nice! And being mean is strange too. Why would you be mean if you want a larger following? Thanks for sharing the list, it is all so true!
