We arrived at Birkenhead House in Hermanus on a stormy day, with dark clouds looming and threatening rain making our first look at this property quite breathtaking. It is located on a jagged cliff overlooking the ocean making it a perfect viewpoint for whale watching or just soaking up the beauty of the surroundings.
We couldn’t have asked for a warmer welcome on this chilly day not only from the staff but also the roaring fireplace in the communal lounge area. I just wanted to curl up there with a book from their library and a glass of red wine. Stepping inside Birkenhead House is like leaving reality behind, beautiful art surrounds you making it visually interesting as well as cosy with stacks of books, bar carts and comfy couches. Our room was out of this world as well with an amazing sea view, a huge bed, lounge area, dressing room and a gorgeous bathroom. The attention to detail made the room really special and I loved the use of colour and art as it made the room an experience itself.
Their food turned out to be just as colourful as their interior and we were spoiled with some interesting and extremely delicious dishes. Some of our favourites included the snoek wontons, beef carpaccio as well as the delicious eggs benedict we had for breakfast. We ate dinner by the fireplace with a view of the pretty twinkling candles next to the pool in the courtyard and it was an unforgettable experience. Breakfast also had a few surprises and in between bites of food we had the chance to see a whale come out to play in the bay from where we were sitting!
Birkenhead also boasts an infinity pool that almost seems to merge with the ocean in front of it. I can only imagine how perfect it must be relaxing in it with a cold glass of Rose on a hot Summer day. We skipped the swimming pool ( the weather just wouldn’t have it ) and opted rather to take a quick walk down to the beach to watch the sunset and listen to the crashing waves.
Birkenhead House really has it all and I could see myself spending a few days there and still wanting more even after leaving. It is close to town but with everything they offer on the property you might be tempted not to leave at all! Its a great place for a couples getaway or honeymoon and we enjoyed every second of our Birkenhead House experience!
Check out their website for more information on the property and to make reservations.
