• One Awesome Night In Barrydale

Recently we spent one night in Barrydale as a bit of a getaway and to do a facebook live for Facet Travel by Tastemade. There are loads of awesome things in the area but if you are only spending one night this is what you should see and do.

Stay at the Karoo Art Hotel

I wont go into detail as you can read my full review on this hotel on the blog already. There are plenty of cool places to stay in Barrydale but if you are looking for something fun and eclectic this is definitely the place!

Head to Ronnies Sex Shop for a drink

Ok this might sounds like a really weird place to have a drink but contrary to what the name suggests its actually a little pub! This awesome little place is a popular spot for tourists, bikers and locals alike. Inside you will find the walls filled with names, messages and pictures that have visited over the years. There are also photos, panties, bra’s and other strange things hanging everywhere. Its about 10km outside of Barrydale and definitely worth a visit but remember to not drink and drive! I enjoyed one ice cold beer and then spent a good while taking photos and reading messages on the walls before setting off again.

    Catch a Karoo Sunset

There is just something special about a Karoo sunset. The light seems somehow different and its not only gorgeous to watch but obviously also a great time to snap some pics! We stopped on one of the many epic roads to get a shot but also had to be real tourists and get some at the Route 62 sign.

    A little sunset story

So there is actually a story that goes with this sunset that is quite crazy and not so funny at the time. A little picnic area on this epic road seemed like the perfect place to take a quick few shots. As you probably might think, its quite stressful standing there with cars heading your way so everything happened quite fast. We were also really hungry so we were trying to get the shot and leave. Anyway we got our shot hopped in the car and left to go eat dinner at Mez.

The next morning we left the hotel at about 10am to go do our facebook live. Mike asks me where I put the gopro as he wants to pack it. My face turns white as I tell him I have no idea where the gopro is. First he goes and checks our room again but then it dawns on him. He handed me the gopro the previous night at the picnic spot where we stopped and I put it down on the barriers next to the road while posing for photos…

Panic sets in and we silently drive the 6km to the spot. I cant even tell you guys the relief I felt when I saw the familiar shape of the gopro and the handle its on chilling without a care in the world in the exact spot I left it. It had been lying there for about 15 hours or so with numerous cars passing and I did not think for one second it would still be there.

    Eat at Mez in Barrydale

Tripadvisor gave us the awesome suggestion to go to Mez for dinner. Silly us didn’t make a booking though and on a lovely evening the outside section was jam packed. We didn’t leave though and sat inside till we were able to move ( we love sitting outside! ) and it was so worth it. This bohemian looking restaurant serves home cooked meals using local ingredients. It also has a Mediterranean twist and everything was unique and delicious. The vibe was awesome and we left very full and very happy!

Have a milkshake and some lunch at Diesel & Creme

Diesel & Creme is a another cool and quirky spot that is known for their delicious and slightly crazy milkshakes. Our facebook live was scheduled for there and we ended up with FOUR milkshakes . I might have gone into a sugar induced coma if I finished them. Being able to have a little bit of each was a definite treat though. We got told that one hot day in Summer they sold 400 of these and I can see why! This is the perfect place to stop for lunch before heading to your next destination.

Have you ever been to Barrydale?

I love your photos! Barrydale looks like such a vibrant and fun city, and the sunset views are to die for. Good to know about Ronnie’s Sex Shop – I probably would’ve wandered in anyway just out of curiosity but good to know it’s just a little pub 🙂 I’d love to visit Barrydale one day.

I’d LOVE to roadtrip Route 66 and Barrydale looks like my kind of place. Those milkshakes look incredible. Is it chocolate brownies on top of them? Yum. I like your cool fashion shots as well.
