Samara Game Reserve Photo Diary

Samara Game Reserve is a luxury lodge and conservation area near to Graaff-Reinet in the Eastern Cape, South Africa. We love this part of the country and we recently got to experience the beautiful landscapes when we stayed at Samara for three nights.

I am a big fan of safari’s and the thrill of going on early morning Game Drives with the possibility to see all kinds of different animals always gives me a rush of adrenaline. At Samara they offer morning and evening game drives and we had to go on all of them because you never know what you might see and boy did we see some awesome things! I have never seen a cheetah so that was on the top of my list and we were so grateful that we got to track one on foot. We also walked through the bush to see the elusive aardvark digging holes to find his dinner of ants which was pretty special in my opinion.

Going to a game lodge isn’t just all about the animals although it is a huge part. We love it because of the beautiful landscapes, the delicious food and the sense of peace that you get from being out in nature.

We stayed at the Karoo lodge in a stand alone suite with a fireplace and a patio and a lovely free standing bath. There was an outdoor shower that I would have loved to use but unfortunately the weather didn’t quit allow for that! Our suite was a short walk from the main homestead that made it nice and private and even though it was a bit of a scary walk at night we were told we had nothing to be afraid of. That didn’t stop Michael and I to have a mini freak out the one night when we spotted a pair of red eyes in a bush near our room. It turned out to be a rabbit and we had a good giggle about it when we were chilling in our big comfy bed.

Three days filled with delicious breakfast, lunch and dinner and lots of relaxing on the veranda soaking up the Karoo and watching the vervet monkeys and their silly antics made us extremely lazy when it came to getting in our car and heading back. Its always sad to leave a magical place like Samara Game Reserve but also in a way its a good feeling to have experienced it at all.

We cant wait to get back to the Karoo with its theatre in the sky and endless landscapes where everything feels just a bit slower and a bit better.

Love your photos!! I’m heading to Kruger next week and not sure what to pack for our Safari. What did you wear for your game drives? Any tips will be helpful! Are jeans okay to wear?
