Seeing The Seven Coloured Earths in Mauritius

Seven Coloured Earths

The Seven Coloured Earths is a geological formation found in the village of Chamarel Mauritius. I have always wanted to see it and on our most recent visit we did thanks to our amazing tour company Mautourco. We had a private driver for the week that took us to some amazing spots around the island. It was great seeing a bit more of Mauritius and its beauty beyond the beaches. Our driver who has been doing tours for 30 years also knew everything  about the island. I took advantage of that and peppered him with questions which he was delighted to answer.

On one of the days we drove to Chamarel to see a view attractions and do a rum tasting. Driving through lush green vegetation and plantations definitely did not set the seen for seeing the seven coloured earths.

This small area of dunes has four distinct colours ( red, brown, violet, green, blue, purple and yellow) It was formed by the decomposition of volcanic rock. It spontaneously settled into different layers giving it an almost painting like look.

The strange thing about these dunes are that they also don’t erode even with the torrential tropical rains Mauritius gets.

Your visit will be quick but there is plenty to do in see in this area, including visiting a famous instagram waterfall!

Tips

Try and get there as early as possible. Our driver explained it’s a very popular are for tourists and it can get pretty full when the huge tour busses arrive!

Try and visit on a sunny day if you can. It was partly cloudy when we went and the colours were definitely best when direct sunlight hit them.

Don’t try and climb over the fence for a photo! Apparently people do that and its such a pity.

Buy your tickets online before you go or go with a tour company like Mautourco and they will sort everything out for you before hand which saves a lot of time!

This place is so beautiful as I see different shades of rusty red. I was not knowing this place in Mauritius and it is great that you have explored this place where few people go. Volcanic rocks are always a beautiful sight as there are many natural patterns and shades. Nice Pictures!

Recently one of my friends was here and showed me the pictures of this place. I was amazed with this geographical phenomenon. You are right. We should make a conscious effort to look beyond the obvious. I have discovered many offbeat gems myself in the clichéd destinations.

It is unusual but the swirls look wonderful. I would like to see the different layers and colors of this dune. I am wondering if they allow visitors to scoop up handfuls of the sand. I would love to visit this place someday.
