The Ultimate Romantic Hiking Safari At Marataba Trails Lodge

Marataba Trails Lodge is perched on the side of the mountain with breathtaking views of Waterfall Valley and The Waterberg. While the views are spectacular its not the only thing that makes it so special. The Marataba trails lodge was specifically designed with hikers in mind with walking safaris winning out over game drives on most days.

Obviously this really appealed to Michael and I and we were beyond excited at taking a walk on the wild side.

Marataba Trails Lodge

I was absolutely obsessed with everything about this beautiful lodge almost as soon as we got there. Its relatively small with only 5 suites for 8 guests and not under 16’s are allowed so the vibe is grown up. The decor is Scandi Style Safari which might sound strange but it was really unique and beautiful. Everything worked really well along side nature with natural finishes giving it a fluid look from inside to outside.

The rooms are private wooden cottages with balconies and the big window in front of your bed. We slept with it open every night and heard the Hyenas call each other outside.

The lodge is eco friendly, using gas to heat up the water and minimal electricity so don’t expect a hair drier! You also wont find wifi in the rooms and no cell service which makes it the perfect place for a digital detox and romance!

Dinner Time

Not only dinner but breakfast and lunch is served around a communal table. I loved the intimate setting and we definitely laughed a lot at dinner time! I was a bit apprehensive at first sharing the table with strangers. That soon disappeared and it was fun hanging out with like minded outdoor enthusiasts from all over the world. You will definitely notice that the food delicious but definitely geared towards healthy eating which fits in very well with the hiking theme. Most meals are served buffet style which I always prefer. There is always plenty for seconds which you will want to have after a good afternoon or morning hike!

Walking Safaris

The main reason to visit Marataba trails lodge is definitely to go on the walking safaris with an experienced guide. It was unlike any hike we have done before which was fun. Having a ranger with a gun in the front definitely ads to the adrenaline. We were only allowed to communicate by tapping the side of our leg and walking quietly through the bush was pretty intense. At one point while walking in utter silence in single file a bird jumped out of a bush and we almost jumped out of our skins. We all had a good giggle but our hearts were definitely racing. Our guide stopped along the way teaching us about different plants, bird calls and tracks.

Why I Found Marataba Trails So Special

I really really loved Marataba Trails Lodge and its difficult to describe why to someone that hasn’t visited. Although I think the photos might help you understand. Sipping on a G&T or a glass of wine next to the fire with lanterns shimmering everywhere felt surreal. Its a place you don’t want to leave and definitely one you will go back to. The staff always call you by name and by the end of your stay they feel more like friends than anything else. You feel looked after but never overwhelmed with everyone wanting to make your stay as special as possible. I also enjoyed the smaller things like hot water bottles in bed every night and a flask of hot water in your room for coffee. Little things add up to a lot and Marataba Trails reminded me of that. Luxury and nature beautifully blended into one.

The Waterberg region is such a pretty area and this lodge looks phenomenal. I would not mind spending some time there. It looks so peaceful and relaxed with those views. And the best way to explore certain regions is by walking. Nice place

This looks lovely. And sipping a G&T while lanterns shimmer sounds fab too. You don’t mention the wildlife that you say on the trails, and now I’m curious. I know bush walks are mostly about birds, tracks and signs rather than big animals, but it would be interesting to know what bigger animals there are in the area.

This place looks incredibly lovely and your pictures are just amazing. I have been in a Safari lodge this January and loved it, but this particular one you have tried out looks perfectly romantic (and also the 16+ sounds good to me :p).
